What it’s for
Section titled “What it’s for”The everyday document: reports, briefs, guides, meeting notes, memos, specs — anything that is mostly text with some structure (headings, lists, tables). This is the kind the assistant reaches for whenever you ask it to “write up” something you’ll want to keep, edit or send on.
Working with it
Section titled “Working with it”The panel has four tabs: Edit (a rich-text editor), Source (raw markdown with a formatting toolbar), Split (source and preview side by side) and Preview.
The panel saves your edits automatically, 2 seconds after you stop typing. It also saves immediately when you:
- press ⌘S (Ctrl+S on Windows and Linux),
- change the tab,
- open another artifact in the panel,
- close the panel or go to a different browser tab.
The footer shows the word count, the character count, the estimated reading time and the save state: Saving…, Saved or Save failed · Retry. After a failed save, click Retry or type again. If you close the page before a save is done, the browser asks you first.
This is the only artifact kind with comments — select text in the preview and click Comment. See Artifacts for how comments and sharing work.
Download offers Markdown, Word (.docx), LaTeX (.tex) and a PDF print view.
When two people edit at once
Section titled “When two people edit at once”When another person or the assistant saves the document and you have no unsaved edits, the panel shows their version immediately. If you have unsaved edits, CoChat does not save over their version. The footer shows who changed it, for example “Name changed this document” or “The assistant changed this document”, and automatic saving stops. Click Review and select one of these:
- Load their version: their text replaces yours. Your text stays in a box with a Copy button until you close the window.
- Keep mine: your text replaces theirs. Their version stays in the document history.
The Review menu
Section titled “The Review menu”The Review menu is on the right of the Edit, Source, Split and Preview tabs of each markdown document. It has three items: Verify paper, Humanize and Share with reviewer. Each item has one line below its name that tells what it does. When an item is not available, it is gray, and the line tells you why. On a phone, the menu button shows only its icon. The menu is not on a public link.
Before Verify paper, Humanize or Undo Humanize starts, the panel saves your edits. Thus the action uses the text that you see. If the save fails, the action does not start.
While a run continues, the menu button shows its progress, for example “Verifying 1/4” or “Humanizing 3/8”. Open the menu to see the progress bar and, for Verify, View report. When a run ends, or when CoChat refuses to start it, a short message shows at the bottom of the screen.
Verify paper
Section titled “Verify paper”Verify paper checks the document in the same way that CoChat checks the PDF of a paper:
- It finds the citations and checks each one.
- It runs Self-check and Stats check.
- It extracts the claims and verifies them.
To find the paper that a citation names, Verify uses, in this order:
- The link of the citation to the paper’s page.
- For an older document that cites with keys, for example
[Chen2019]: the paper that the citation list of the chat gives for that key. Verify uses this list only when you can read the chat of the document. - The entry in the References section with the same first author and year, when the check found that the DOI of the entry is correct.
The result opens as a paper verification report in the chat of the document. Each run uses one paper verification. Free: 1 per day (UTC), up to 5 per month. Starter: 50 per month. Pro: 300 per month. Starter and Pro have no daily limit. Verify on the same text opens the same report again and uses nothing. To check the document again, change its text. When the allowance is used up, Verify paper is gray, and its line tells you when you get a new one. A message tells you how to get more.
Humanize
Section titled “Humanize”Humanize rewrites the text of the document to remove the patterns that make text sound AI-written, for example “not X but Y” contrasts, one-line closing sentences and inflated words. It keeps the meaning, the facts, the numbers and the names. It does not change headings, links, citations, code, math, tables or the References section.
- Free: 1 humanize per day. Starter and Pro: unlimited. A run that fails before any rewriting does not count. When the free run of the day is used, Humanize is gray until the next day (UTC), and its line tells you why.
- You must be able to edit the chat of the document, or the owner must invite you to the document as an Editor. A share link that lets anyone edit is not enough.
- During the run, the panel shows the progress and you cannot edit the document. If another person changes the document during the run, the run stops and the document does not change.
- CoChat checks each rewritten section, and a second model compares it with the original to make sure the meaning did not change. A section that does not pass keeps its original text.
- When the run is done, select Undo Humanize in the Review menu to put back the text from before the run. If the document changed after the run, CoChat asks you before it replaces those changes. CoChat keeps the last 10 versions of each document.
- A document can have one Humanize run at a time. A document longer than 120,000 characters cannot be humanized.
Share with reviewer
Section titled “Share with reviewer”Share with reviewer opens the share dialog of the document. This is the same dialog that the people icon in the panel header opens. Invite a person by email, also a person who does not have a CoChat account yet, and select Viewer or Editor. The person can read the document and comment on it, and the email links directly to the document. Only the owner of the chat and the people who can edit the chat see this item.
Citations
Section titled “Citations”When a document draws on research papers, it cites them the way a paper does: author-year references in the text — (Chen et al., 2019) — and a References list at the end, in APA style and alphabetical by first author. The assistant writes both.
Each citation in the text is a link to the paper’s public page. In the panel, hover a citation (or tap it on a phone) to see the paper’s title, authors, journal, citation count and whether its details were verified. The links stay links when you download the document as Markdown or Word, so the references keep working outside CoChat.
Try asking
Section titled “Try asking”- “Write me a one-page project brief for the new onboarding flow.”
- “Turn these notes into a meeting summary I can edit.”
- “Draft an onboarding guide for new hires, with a checklist at the end.”
